Best of the Bugs
Selection Process

The Criteria for the UF/IFAS Entomology and Nematology Department's
"Best of the Bugs" World Wide Web Site Award are:

  1. No University of Florida World Wide Web sites are eligible for this award.

  2. Content of the sites will be the most important factor. The content should be accurate and add substantive information to the "science" of entomology and nematology. For example:

    • How informative is the site?
    • Does it cover its topic in a broad, deep and thorough manner?
    • Is the information useful, accurate and up-to-date?
    • Does it serve the primary target audience of the site: i.e., different depth and presentation for kids, lay adults or professionals.

  3. Sites should be in the top 5% of such sites on the World Wide Web, according to the judgement of the evaluators.

  4. Sites will be judged on organization and ease of use. For example:

    • Does the design assess the site's layout and presentation?
    • Does it lead visitors through the information easily?
    • Are the pages beautiful, colorful and easy to use?
    • Does the site use video, audio and original graphics?
    • Do these enhancements deter use of the site by making it more difficult to access?
    • And once again, is it designed to benefit its target audience?

  5. Once a site is offered for evaluation by any member of the department, the evaluators (the World Wide Web award committee), will be given at least two weeks to review the site. A few strict rules are:

    • Excellence is our only criterion.
    • The committee will make no distinction between commercial, public and personal sites.
    • Sites cannot pay to be listed as a UF/IFAS "Best of the Bugs" site.

  6. A positive vote of at least two-thirds of the Committee shall be required to award the UF/IFAS "Best of the Bugs" Award Logo. Webmasters of sites receiving this award should be aware of the following:

    • The committee will attempt to keep abreast of alterations to all UF/IFAS "Best of the Bugs" sites.
    • Sites may be reviewed when they undergo significant changes.
    • Sites may be removed from the UF/IFAS "Best of the Bugs" list.
    • Sites that later improve can make their way back into the list.

  7. Membership on the World Wide Web Award committee is open to any member of the department and individuals shall be appointed when an opening exists.
